The drawing begins with a simple line drawing. Background colours are put in first but areas for highlights left untouched. Shadows are included and more colours added.

The colours are blended with a cotton bud which pushes the colour into the grain of the paper. The smoothness adds a more realistic effect.

A popular approach to showing a "work in progress" is to work certain areas to a stage of completion whilst leaving areas unstarted.

The larger areas requiring more work will be completed last.
